CASEL Releases an Update to the Definition of Social and Emotional Learning
Twenty-six years ago, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) first introduced the term "social and emotional learning (SEL)" to the education world. The SEL field has evolved tremendously since then.
This year, CASEL has released a 2020 update to the definition of SEL along with new iterations of the "CASEL 5" core competencies and "CASEL Wheel" visual framework. These updates reinforce CASEL's commitment to "an expanded vision and growing research base for social and emotional learning" that emphasizes SEL’s ability to advance educational equity and excellence.
Transforming Education Publishes School Leader & Educator Self-Reflection Tools
To support school leaders and educators through the process of introspectively reviewing their own practice when it comes to social-emotional learning, the team at Transforming Education published a new set of tools to enable individual and collaborative reflection.
The tools (which includes reflection statements, guiding questions, recommendations, and concrete sample indicators) are designed to facilitate the practice of SEL integration
A New Resource to Support the Whole Student from the Resilience Lab at UW
The Resilience Lab was founded in 2015 to promote a culture of well-being at the University of Washington through education, research partnerships and our core programs and initiatives.
Earlier this month, the Resilience Lab introduced a new resource: the Well-Being for Life & Learning Guidebook.
Combining research, best practices, and personal testimony, the guidebook gives faculty and other instructors concrete ideas and direct input from the UW campus community around supporting the whole student and promoting resilience and compassion.
